The Order of God: Why It Changes Everything

Many believers love God deeply, yet few truly understand the order in which the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit work together. When we begin to understand this divine order, something powerful happens—our faith becomes stronger, and our prayers become more confident and effective.

Jesus said in John 4:24 (NLT), “For God is Spirit, so those who worship him must worship in spirit and in truth.” That word truth matters. We cannot approach God according to our own ideas or feelings. We must come to Him according to the truth He has revealed about Himself in His Word. When we understand God’s order, our relationship with Him becomes stronger because our faith is more firmly built on His truth. Our love for Christ and our trust in the Father expands, and we experience the indwelling presence of the Holy Spirit without confusion.

God’s divine order is not random, and it is not complicated once we see it in Scripture. The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are not three separate gods. They are the one true God who eternally exists as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Scripture reveals that within this one divine nature, God has made Himself known through these three persons. Moses declared in Deuteronomy 6:4 (NLT), “Listen, O Israel! The Lord is our God, the Lord alone.” In the New Testament, we begin to see how the one God has revealed Himself as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. One beautiful example appears at the baptism of Jesus. Matthew 3:16–17 (NLT) shows Jesus standing in the water, the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and the Father speaking from heaven, saying, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.”

The Father is the One who planned and initiated redemption from the beginning. The Son, Jesus Christ, is the One who came into the world to accomplish that plan through His life, death, and resurrection. And the Holy Spirit is the One who now lives within believers, guiding us, strengthening us, and helping us walk in the life Christ secured for us. When we understand this order, our faith stops feeling scattered. We begin to see how God has revealed Himself and how He draws us into relationship with Him through Christ by the presence of the Holy Spirit.

God’s plan has been unfolding from the very beginning, and it continues moving forward exactly as He designed it. Nothing about our salvation happened by accident. It was established by God long before we ever drew our first breath.

Ephesians 1:3 (NLT) says, “All praise to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ.” Notice the order here. The blessings come from the Father, but they reach us through our union with Christ. Even in this one verse we begin to see how God has structured our relationship with Him.

Paul continues in Ephesians 1:4 (NLT): “Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in his eyes.” Long before we were born, God already had a plan in place. Our lives are not random, and our relationship with Him is not accidental.

God’s order in salvation reflects the nature of God Himself. The Father planned redemption, the Son accomplished it, and the Holy Spirit now applies it in the lives of believers. When we understand that order, our faith becomes steady because we see that salvation rests on the truth of what God has done, not on the instability of human effort. We begin leaning on God with greater confidence when we realize that our relationship with Heavenly Father was designed by Him from the very beginning.

Then Paul reveals something even more beautiful in Ephesians 1:5 (NLT): “God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.” God chose to bring us into His family through Jesus Christ. That order matters. The Father is the One who desired us. The Son is the One who made the way for us. Without Christ, none of us could stand before the holiness of God. But because of Jesus, we are welcomed into the family of God.

Our salvation was never random. The Father planned it, the Son secured it, and the Holy Spirit now works within us to bring that life into reality. When we understand that order, our faith increases because we see that God Himself designed every part of our redemption.

This is why Christ holds such a central place in God’s order. Colossians 1:15–16 (NLT) explains it this way: “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation… Everything was created through him and for him.” Everything in heaven and on earth was created through Jesus Christ and for Him. The Father has given everything to the Son. This reflects the deep love and authority that was established between them long before the world existed.

Understanding this truth changes the way we approach God. Our standing with God is not based on our feelings or our performance—it is based on what God has already done through Christ. Because we are in Christ, we are accepted by the Father. And when we see that salvation belongs entirely to God, all glory returns to Him.

And this brings us back to prayer. When we pray, we are not coming to God based on our own righteousness. We are coming in the name of Jesus, knowing that the Father hears us because we belong to His Son. The Holy Spirit within us helps guide our prayers and strengthens our faith as we seek God.

When believers understand God’s order, confusion disappears. Faith becomes stronger. Prayer becomes more confident. And we begin to appreciate the incredible plan God set in motion long ago—a plan that is still unfolding today for all who belong to Christ. ■
