A New Nature, A New Life
God already had a plan for our lives before we ever had awareness of it. Before identity, before decisions, before failure or success—there was already intention in God’s mind concerning who we are and what our lives were meant to carry. That means our existence is not random, and it is not self-owned. Scripture is clear: we were created by God and for God, and our lives ultimately belong to Him.
Ephesians 2:10 (NLT) says, “For we are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” That word “masterpiece” is not poetic language—it’s identity. It means God formed something with a clear plan in mind, with design and direction already built in. A man does not discover purpose by guessing; he discovers it by returning to the One who designed him.
Ephesians 2 also forces us to deal with the truth about where we started. Ephesians 2:1-2 (NLT) says, “Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world. He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God.” That Scripture does not soften anything. It shows us plainly that before Christ, we were spiritually dead—living according to the world’s system, driven by the flesh, separated from the life of God. And that’s important to understand because many people think being lost simply means being imperfect or struggling. But this was deeper than weakness. It was separation. A life still functioning outwardly, but completely disconnected inwardly from the One who gives real life.
Then Scripture shifts the entire direction of the story with two words: But God.
Ephesians 2:4-5 (NLT) tells us, “But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead. (It is only by God’s grace that you have been saved!)” That changes everything. God did not leave us stuck in that old condition. He made us alive with Christ. Salvation is not behavior modification—it is spiritual resurrection. A dead spirit made alive, and a new nature placed inside a man who now has to learn how to live differently.
And this is why being born again is far deeper than just religious language people throw around. It is a real internal change. There is a new nature now. A new identity. A recreated spirit means the old identity no longer ours. That old life may still try to pull on him through the flesh, pride, anger, lust, selfish ambition, or old ways of thinking, but it no longer carries the same authority unless he keeps yielding himself back to it. There is now a new standard inside of us that has to be developed, and renewed. It must be strengthened through God’s Word, sharpened through obedience, and developed through walking with Christ daily.
From that place, purpose stops being about ambition alone. It stops being reduced to titles, platforms, or external achievement. Purpose is deeper than visibility. It is alignment with the Will of God and participation in what He is building in the earth.
John 3:16-17 (NLT) says, “For this is how God loved the world: He gave his one and only Son… God sent his Son into the world not to judge the world, but to save the world through him.”
Jesus is the clearest expression of purpose. His life was not centered on Himself, but fully submitted to the Father. He carried truth, but also carried responsibility toward people. Everything He did was connected to the mission of God, not personal elevation.
That becomes the pattern for every man in Christ.
Purpose is not something we manufacture through effort alone. It is something we step into as we submit to God’s agenda. As we are renewed in the mind, shaped in character, and strengthened in spirit, the life of God begins to flow through how we lead, how we speak, how we respond, and how we carry responsibility.
Romans 12:2 calls this transformation—the renewing of the mind so that we are no longer shaped by the world’s system, but shaped by the Will of God.
At its core, purpose is not just what a man does. It is what a man becomes under God’s leadership. And when that alignment is real, what flows out of his life begins to impact everything around him—family, leadership, influence, and responsibility.
We don’t belong to ourselves. We belong to God. And real strength starts when a man understands that and builds his life from that foundation. ■
