A Different Way of Thinking
In today’s world, the phrase “kingdom mindset” gets thrown around a lot. Some use it as if it were just a filter for their thoughts or even as a tool for arrogance. But the kingdom mindset is not about pride—it’s about alignment. It’s about setting our minds in agreement with the rule and reign of Jesus Christ.
We have an adversary who is always looking to attack our minds. That’s why a kingdom mindset matters. Philippians 2:5 (NLT) tells us, “You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.” The kingdom mindset is that attitude—it is a way of thinking that aligns our hearts with Christ’s reign. It doesn’t change our identity, because our identity was already secured in Him the moment we believed (2 Corinthians 5:17). But it does shape our priorities, refine our attitudes, and strengthen us to live out who we already are in Christ.
When we made Him the head of our lives, we were called into a new way of living. And new living demands new thinking—a mind surrendered to the Holy Spirit.
The Call to Transformation
Romans 12:2 (NLT) instructs us, “Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
The kingdom mindset is a transformed mind. It is not clinging to the old way of thinking but submitting to God’s way. Proverbs 4:23 (NLT) says, “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” The heart—part of our soul—shapes everything we do. What we let in will eventually flow out. If our hearts are negative, our words and our lives will show it. That’s why Proverbs continues, “Avoid all perverse talk; stay away from corrupt speech.”
When we allow God to renew our minds as we change the way we think, and when we guard our hearts as His Word commands, something powerful happens—we stop chasing the patterns of the world and begin to think God’s thoughts. Our priorities shift, our desires align with His Will, and His truth becomes the lens through which we see life.
Setting Our Sights on Heaven
The kingdom mindset lifts our focus beyond earthly things. Colossians 3:1–4 (NLT) says, “Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.”
This is what it means to live with a kingdom mindset. We wake up each day with heaven in view. We ask, “Lord, how can my life bring You glory today? How can I be a blessing in Your master plan?” A kingdom mindset reminds us that our lives are no longer our own—they are hidden in Christ.
Serving the King, Advancing the Kingdom
A kingdom mindset is rooted in the Word of God. It is focused on serving the King and advancing His kingdom. For many, that doesn’t make sense—and that’s the difference between the world and us. When we refuse to do what displeases God and choose instead to live for Him, that is the kingdom mindset in action. We bring the kingdom of heaven into every room we enter and every conversation we have.
Jesus said in John 18:36 (NLT), “My Kingdom is not an earthly kingdom. If it were, my followers would fight to keep me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. But my Kingdom is not of this world.” This world is not our home. We are here with a divine assignment: to testify to the truth and to reveal Christ wherever we go.
Confidence in God Alone
Living with a kingdom mindset means placing our full confidence in God. Not in people. Not in systems. Not even in ourselves. God will show us when our trust is misplaced. But He calls us to a higher trust—a trust in Him alone.
John 18:37 (NLT) records Jesus’ words to Pilate: “You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. All who love the truth recognize that what I say is true.” The kingdom mindset takes Jesus at His Word. It recognizes Him as King, not just in theory, but in how we live and how we think.
Living It Out
So what is the kingdom mindset? It is a life surrendered to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. It is a mind renewed by His Spirit, a heart guarded by His Word, and a focus set on the realities of heaven. It’s refusing to be shaped by the world and choosing instead to be transformed by the truth of God.
A kingdom mindset doesn’t just think about heaven—it brings heaven down into earth’s everyday moments. When we serve others in love, when we speak truth, when we honor God in the smallest decisions, we are living as kingdom people. ■
