Revelation 20: The Final Victory and the New Beginning
Revelation 20 ushers us into a powerful vision of the final victory of good over evil, where the promises of God unfold in the most profound and awesome way. In this chapter, we witness the binding of satan, the judgment of all souls, and the ultimate establishment of God’s eternal reign. It is a moment of divine justice and mercy, where the faithful are rewarded and the forces of darkness are silenced for good. As we step into these sacred words, we are called to reflect on the hope that lies in the triumph of God’s love, the assurance that, no matter the trials we face, His plan will prevail, and His kingdom will endure forever.
The Binding of Satan
Revelation 20:1-3 (NLT) tells us, “1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven with the key to the bottomless pit and a heavy chain in his hand. 2 He seized the dragon--that old serpent, who is the devil, Satan--and bound him in chains for a thousand years. 3 The angel threw him into the bottomless pit, which he then shut and locked so Satan could not deceive the nations anymore until the thousand years were finished. Afterward he must be released for a little while.”
Satan’s reign of deception and chaos is finally brought to an end, and in this extraordinary moment in the prophetic vision, we are reminded of the overwhelming power and faithfulness of God. It is a beautiful, humbling reflection on His goodness. This moment is not just a glimpse of the future but a confirmation of His promises to us. Through this prophecy, we find assurance that evil's final end is certain. We know from God’s Word that Jesus’ victory on the cross has already sealed satan’s defeat. The moment He died and rose again, the power of sin and death was broken, once and for all.
As 1 John 3:8 (NLT) powerfully declares, “But when people keep on sinning, it shows that they belong to the devil, who has been sinning since the beginning. But the Son of God came to destroy the works of the devil.” In this profound truth, we find peace, knowing that the ultimate battle has already been won, and God’s eternal victory is ours to embrace. The on-going of time has continued to capture the war between good and evil, even into this present age. This points to the truth that our God is not bound by time, but He has graciously extended it for our benefit–accommodating our free-will to step into the victory that Christ has won for us. Through His infinite mercy, He is allowing for the perfecting of our faith, for saints of old, those in the present, and those who will triumph over the Great Tribulation.
Ephesians 2:7 (NLT) says: “So God can point to us in all future ages as examples of the incredible wealth of his grace and kindness toward us, as shown in all he has done for us who are united with Christ Jesus.” Time is serving the multiple purposes of our sovereign God. It allows for the full display of His glory, mercy, and justice as more people come to know and be transformed by Christ’s victory. The delay also allows for the incredible blessing of final purification, where evil is eradicated, and the full restoration of creation can occur in a way that brings ultimate peace and justice.
The Reign of the Saints
In Revelation 20:4-6, we see the faithful believers that have remained steadfast to God, reigning with Christ for a thousand years. They are given thrones and entrusted with the privilege of judging alongside Jesus. This is a powerful and awe-inspiring image of the glorious reward that awaits those who stay true to their faith.
This thousand-year reign is often referred to as the “Millennium.” While we may not fully grasp every detail of this reign, the heart of it is unmistakable: Christ is victorious, and his victory is our victory. We may face struggles, suffering, and trials in the present, but this passage gives us a hopeful glimpse of the amazing future we’re promised with Christ. We are not saved to watch from the sidelines; we are invited to be part of his eternal reign, actively living in the victory he’s already won for us.
In the Old Testament, God promised His people a kingdom of peace and blessing. Isaiah 9:6-7 (NLT) tells us: “6 For a child is born to us, a son is given to us. The government will rest on his shoulders. And he will be called: Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. 7 His government and its peace will never end. He will rule with fairness and justice from the throne of his ancestor David for all eternity. The passionate commitment of the LORD of Heaven's Armies will make this happen!”This prophecy paints a picture of our blessed Messiah—a King whose reign will bring lasting peace, fairness, and justice. Jesus, the fulfillment of this promise, came to bring God's Kingdom to earth, offering a peace that transcends understanding. While we still await the full realization of this eternal Kingdom, we are already invited to experience the reign of Christ in our hearts.
Revelation 20 is the fulfillment of that promise. What began with God's covenant to Israel now extends to all who place their trust in Jesus, Jew and Gentile alike. As Revelation 20:4 (NLT) declares, “I saw thrones, and the people sitting on them had been given the authority to judge. And I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their testimony about Jesus and for proclaiming the word of God. They had not worshiped the beast or his statue, nor accepted his mark on their foreheads or their hands. They all came to life again, and they reigned with Christ for a thousand years.” This powerful image is a reminder of the reward for those of us who remain faithful, as we reign with Christ in the fullness of his victory. ■
