Jesus wasn’t trying to impress people. He didn’t bend under the pressure of the crowds, and He never let the weight of religious expectations mess with His mission. He moved how the Father told Him to move. That’s why He could look past all the distractions and chaos. People back then thought that rituals and rules was the way to go. He elevated mercy, truth, and purity of heart over all that. He said it Himself in John 6:38 (NLT): “For I have come down from heaven to do the will of God who sent me, not to do my own will.” That’s the mindset we’re called into. If we say we’re His, then we don’t just carry His name—we reflect His life.

His Treasure, Set Apart

When you look at the way Jesus lived, you begin to understand why God calls His people “set apart.” It was never about status or superiority—it was about belonging. Deuteronomy 7:6 (NLT) says, “For you are a holy people, who belong to the Lord your God. Of all the people on earth, the Lord your God has chosen you to be his own special treasure.” That’s not a casual label; its identity spoken by the mouth of God. He didn’t rescue you so you could disappear into the crowd—He marked you as His treasure.

And Exodus 19:5–6 (NLT) goes even deeper: “Now if you will obey me and keep my covenant, you will be my own special treasure from among all the peoples on earth; for all the earth belongs to me. And you will be my kingdom of priests, my holy nation.” Think about that—the earth already belongs to Him, yet He still sets His affection on a people He calls His own. That’s covenant. That’s calling. That’s divine purpose. You are not random. You are chosen to reflect Christ.

Why God chose a people for Himself

God didn’t need a people—He desired one. Ownership of the earth was already His, but intimacy was what He wanted. Think of it: a Father with countless responsibilities still treasures His children above everything else. That’s how God looks at His own.

Israel wasn’t chosen because of their size, strength, or goodness. Deuteronomy 7:7 makes it clear: they were the least of all nations. They were chosen because of God’s covenant love—a promise He made to Abraham when He said, “Through your descendants all the nations of the earth will be blessed” (Genesis 22:18, NLT). That blessing wasn’t meant to stop with them. They were the vessel, the stage, the living testimony that pointed forward to Christ.

When God calls a people His “special treasure,” He’s not playing favorites—He’s pointing to purpose. Israel was set apart to reveal who He is, to carry His promises and guard the bloodline that would one day bring the Messiah. That’s not light work—that’s destiny. And now, because of Christ, that same call is on us. We’ve been chosen to put His covenant love on display, to live out His truth, and to shine His glory in a world that would stay blind without it.

A Kingdom of Priests

Being God’s people was infinitely more than just privilege—it was about representation. Israel stood as a shadow of what Christ would fulfill, the One who became the ultimate Mediator between God and humanity. And now, in Him, we carry that calling forward. Scripture puts it plain in 1 Peter 2:9 (NLT): “You are royal priests, a holy nation, God’s very own possession.” That’s not just a title to wear—it’s a responsibility to live.

Royal priests aren’t spectators; they’re participants in God’s plan. We’ve been given access to His presence, not to hoard it but to share it. Our lives are meant to be bridges, connecting people to God and carrying God’s heart to people. Which means this: His goodness isn’t meant to pile up in our own lives; it’s meant to spill over into the lives around us.

The Big Picture

God didn’t call us His treasure because He needed one. He already owns the earth and everything in it. He called us His treasure so the world could see His covenant love and His holiness alive in human lives. That’s the covenant purpose He set in motion before the foundation of the world.

Living with that kingdom mindset changes everything. It means remembering that we belong to Him, that our lives carry purpose, and that eternity is always in view. We’re set apart, not for show, but for service. Chosen—not to blend in—but to reflect Christ in a world that would never see Him otherwise. ■
